Pompeii
Found completely by accident.
What a marvellous preservation of ancient history. The excavations have been ongoing for 300 years and there is still so much to uncover.

Still being excavated
It is huge and It is incredible to think how much material has been removed in order to expose the ruins. Work is still continuing with much of the area still to be unearthed.

Casts of human remains
Many bodies were buried inside the hot ash and when it cooled the bodies decomposed and left behind people shaped holes. They were filled with plaster of paris and what remained were human and shaped moulds.

Animals too
The same happened to the animals leaving life like plaster moulds.

Amphitheatre
One of the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatres it was also buried in the eruption. 6 bodies were found here during the excavations.
