Auschwitz - Birkenau.
On our last day in Poland, we spend a very sad and sombre afternoon exploring the historical sites of Auschwitz and Auschwitz Birkenau.
These places are truly heart-breaking, and you can feel the evil in the air, even the birds are silent.
1.1 million lives were lost here.

Train Tracks.
At Birkenau the prisoners were brought by train and the tracks led right into the camp. The saddest sight in the world.

Destruction
When the defeat of the Nazi's became certain buildings were torn down, blown up or set on fire to hide what happened here. Records were also destroyed.

Pools of ashes
Some of the ashes were disposed of in various pools on the Birkenau site. They have erected "gravestones" for the lives lost.

Sleeping huts
Some of the remaining buildings were used as sleeping accommodation. The worst of these was the one obviously used for children. They had painted childlike pictures inside. They had basis bunks and minimal heat with basic bathrooms. heart-breaking.
